Carlsbad caverns to Las Cruces

6:30 we get up (actually under the assumption that it is an hour later though) – 8:30 on the road to the Caverns again. We first take the 9.5 miles Walnut Canyon Desert Drive, a one way road showing us cactuses and rocks as well as some small birds but nothing we couldn’t along the road. The caverns though were very nice and impressive. The elevator brought us down 750 ft from there we walked the 1.5 mile trail around Big Room where we saw stalagmites and stalactites in all sizes and shapes. The cave actually formed 2 to 4 million years ago.
At about 12:30 we continue our way towards El Paso through Texan and New Mexican desert. From time to time we saw wild horses and than nothing anymore for miles and miles. We bypass El Paso and head directly north to Las Cruces where we follow Hwy 10 to Deming, another 60 miles. At the Days Inn we get a room for USD 39, incl. breakfast.  The Holiday Inn seems to have a good American Grill (according too AAA guide) – well, the salad bar was ok, but the sirloin was bitter and the mashed potatoes cold. To compensate we indulged an ice cream at McDonalds.
