In St. George it’s nice and warm already in the morning, so we have a quick breakfast and then head south on HWY 15 towards Las Vegas after Andrej and Marco gave the car a quick wash.
We chose to take the route along Lake Mead where we drive through hilly desert landscape with beautiful colors and shapes, lots of shrubs and cactuses. At Red Rock we stop and let the soft red rock formations impress us – there definitely must have been some water some time in the past to shape all these waves and holes.
Then we stop at a marina before we continue on to Hoover Dam. Hoover Dam was built between 1931 and 1936. They seem to have chosen the narrowest passage between the steep canyon walls, but the whole structure is very impressive and huge. The level of the lake though is very low and a security guy we chat with says that this is normal in Spring and that the level will raise another 30 to 40 feet (about 10 Meter) until summer.
In Las Vegas we first explore “The Strip” by car and pick the Mirage as centrally located and not too expensive Hotel. So we line up in their check-in lane and get a room for the four of us. Once we have stored our luggage and have packed our cameras and a sweater we hit “The Strip” on foot – it is about 5pm. We walk and take pictures we stand and watch people and the water show at the Bellagio. It is very crowded with a lot of spring breakers and the later the night the shorter the skirts and the higher the heels. Instead of gambling we decide to have a nice dinner at the Monte Carlo. At around midnight we are back at the Mirage with burning feet and and smoking heads – it has been an exhausting day/evening, but we once again are impressed by Sin City!
