Cottonwood Canyon Road through the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

The weather forecast looks good until mid afternoon, so we have enough time for the Cottonwood Canyon Road, which is a 39 miles long gravel and dirt road through the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and as the way back around the National Monument would be about 180 Miles we need even enough time to do the distance twice.

We stop a lot as the landscape is so impressive and fascinating. On one side of the road there are red and white round rock formations and on the other side of the road are very edgy brown or gray mountains and hills. In the valley is the Paria “River” and the Cottonwood trees that gave the canyon its name.

After about 4 hours and 27 miles we take a turn, as the sky is covering up with thick clouds again. We are lucky though and get all the way back to Page without rain.
