To look at things is very different from seeing it – Oscar Wilde

Grand Canyon, AZ

We get up to the most beautiful weather, it is still a bit chili and windy but the sky is blue and the sun is shining.

We first take a short tour through historic Flagstaff and then head north on HWY 180 towards Grand Canyon. We are passing snow covered mountains and drive through, sometimes more sometimes less dense forest, but there is no hint to what is to come: The Grand Canyon!

Astrid’s and Andrej’s jaws drop when they get their first glimpse of the canyon. We are all standing there and are fascinated by the breathtaking view. The air is very clear and the views from the different viewpoints are magnificent. We take walks along the rim and even see some deer and three elk. The elk are roaming around along the steep walls that lead down to the canyon, the deer are up on the plateau. We forget time and suddenly realize that we should move on and make our way towards Page.

Since part of the road is closed we are guided onto a detour, which leads us to a place where local Indians show us some dinosaur tracks that were discovered since the 1960’s.

Unfortunately, we don’t make it in time for the sunset to Page, but we arrive there shortly after and find a room at the Best Western Plus. Since it is already late we only have a quick pizza at Stromboli.

What a gorgeous day!
