To look at things is very different from seeing it – Oscar Wilde

Mojave Desert, CA

SONY SLT-A99V, f/13, 1/400 sec, ISO 100

After a short night at the Mirage hotel, we get up at around 8am and first find a Starbucks for a Cappuccino and a bite to eat.

We quickly find the ramp for HWY 15 and head south towards San Diego. Since we don’t want to just drive back on the Highway we get off and drive through the Mojave National Preserve, partly on paved and partly on wash board roads. Andrej had been watching out for snakes since they arrived in San Diego and finally we see one: it is warming up in the sun laying in the middle of the gravel road.

Further south on the way to Twentynine Palms we stop at the salt saline and while standing there we see a hiker coming our way on the road, he is protesting against Government corruption by walking from Oceanside, CA to Washington D.C. in one year – impressive and hopefully he will achieve something with his walk!

We are on the road the whole day, before arriving in San Diego just at the right time for dinner at the Thai House.

It was an impressive trip once again!

  • I think that you made the best out of this trip. Of course, there would have been many more natural beauties to visit, but the short time didn’t allow it. The good thing is that there will be room enough for the next visit to this wonderful corner of the USA. I am sure that Andrej and Astrid have acquired a taste to make another tour (including the big trees and probably a short vacation on a houseboat on Lake Powell and Moab). I wish a safe trip back to Switzerland (but don’t hurry, it’s cold and snowy!!). See you in Zurich soon. Best regards to everybody!
