Navigate the Uncertain Road Ahead

After dealing with severe pain for about 25 years due to chronic cluster headaches, Jackie and I are facing some new challenges following some very serious health news.

It all started in early summer with pain in my left groin. We initially thought it might be related to a hernia, as I previously had hernia surgery. A CT scan was ordered to check the hernia mesh, and it was almost by coincidence that the scan revealed a fracture in my left hip. Further investigations eventually showed that the fracture was caused by cancer.

Subsequent tests confirmed that I have lung cancer that has already spread to my lymph nodes and hip.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe how long it took to get a definitive answer. After what must have been close to 20 CT scans, MRIs, X-rays, and blood tests, we finally got confirmation of the diagnosis earlier this week. It’s been a long and frustrating road, filled with uncertainty and anxiety along the way. Now we’re trying to come to terms with the news and figure out what comes next.

One thing I know for certain, though, is that I don’t have to face this alone. I have a strong partner by my side in Jackie, and I’m incredibly grateful to have her with me as we navigate what comes next.

As many of you know, wildlife photography is a big part of my life. The hip fracture has already made it difficult to get out into the field and walk the distances I used to. With the cancer diagnosis and the treatment that lies ahead, I honestly don’t know how much my photography will change in the coming months.

For now, I’ll take things as they come. I hope to continue doing what I love, even if that means adjusting how, where, and how often I go out to photograph wildlife. I may have to slow down a bit, but my interest in the natural world and the moments I get to capture with my camera hasn’t changed.

I wanted to share this personal update because photography is such an important part of my life, and I know some of you have followed my work for a long time. I don’t know what the future holds, but I’ll take things one day at a time and see where the journey takes me.

Finally, I want to thank Jackie once again for standing by my side through all of this. Her support means more to me than I can put into words. I’m also very grateful to my friends for their continued support, kind words, and encouragement. It means a lot to know that so many people are thinking of us during this difficult time.
