Early mornings at the Desert Botanical Garden have a special kind of quiet. The air is cool, the light is soft, and for a brief window, the garden offers a real treat—both for the birds and for those of us behind the camera.
Not long after arriving, the hummingbirds showed up at one of the water features. Anna’s and Costa’s hummingbirds darted in for their morning bath, hovering and splashing as if the cold water didn’t bother them at all. At barely the size of a thumb, they’re easy to miss – but once they arrive, it’s impossible to look away.
Right in between the hummingbird activity, a common house finch appeared, taking advantage of the same water feature for a quick, enthusiastic bath. It was a brief interlude before the hummingbirds returned, keeping the pace lively and unpredictable.
The whole show usually lasts about an hour. With only a few flowers blooming this time of year, the birds eventually move on – likely continuing their search for food once their morning treat is over.
We continued our walk through the garden afterward, slowing down to watch bees working the rosemary flowers – quiet, steady activity that felt perfectly in tune with the calm of the morning.
I came home with more than 1,800 images from this short excursion. Below is a curated gallery capturing some of those fleeting moments from a beautiful desert morning.
