Coyote Buttes South – An alternative to The Wave

SONY ILCE-7RM5, f/16, 1/500 sec, ISO 320

We are leaving the hotel just after 6am to be at the turn off from House Rock Road to the narrow, sandy road that leads to Cottonwood Cove just before sunrise.

The sand seems to be deeper than we remember it and we don’t know yet how our new car will handle it, so it is bit nerve racking. The low temperatures help to keep the sand compact but we have to keep in mind that in the afternoon it will be warmer and the sand softer. Marco does a great job navigating the terrain and brings us out there safely. We arrive at the parking lot at 8:30am.

We start off to the right, then climb up and slowly make our way northwards in the direction of the Southern Wave. The area is breath taking and way bigger then The Wave. We also think it offers more variety and definitely more solitude, we only see one other group from afar when we are already on our way back to the car. Since it is very windy and not inviting to sit down and eat, we only have our quick lunch back at the parking lot early afternoon.

Thanks to Marco’s skills and a surprisingly capable car, we make it back to House Rock Road without having to lower the tire pressure or getting stuck.

On the way back we stop at Navajo Bridge, there are again at least a dozen California Condors in the area but not much action.

It’s been another great trip to Page and even though we have been here many times already, there are always new things to discover!
