We have to check out by 11am and today we are checking out. Colorado Springs is beautiful but today it’s cloudy and the forecast is not very good for the next few days. This means that it doesn’t make any sense to head north to the mountains (Rocky Mountains) or to visit the Gardens of Goods, or any other natural beauties.
Marco already checked the map and figured that we could make it to Amarillo, TX (about 380 miles).
At first we drive through green landscape with trees and grassland and the further south we get the dryer everything around us becomes. Soon all we see is prairie, brown grass from horizon to horizon. In some areas we see some agriculture but less and less. What we see more than we like though are cattle stations. They each have tens of thousands of cattle and the factory is just next to it – I don’t think we will have beef for dinner tonight. Here and there we see some single cows or small groups (they are the lucky ones), prairie dogs, an antelope or pronghorn, then some windmills and otherwise a whole lot of nothingness!
It is a looonnnnggg drive. Until we finally arrive in Amarillo it’s already after 9pm local time (meanwhile we are in Central Time zone), so we have been on the road for more than 8 hours! We find a room at the Super 8 and have a very quick dinner at the Waffle House next door.
Amarillo seems to be a hub for trucks, we see several big parking lots where they gathered for the night and we have seen countless trucks on the road today.
