In the morning we first head back on HWY 89 to Prescott and take a morning walk at Lake Watson with its round bolder rocks – a fascinating scenery.
We then drive up through the mountains and forests to Jerome, an old copper mining town that once was the 4th largest city in Arizona but today has only 450 souls living there and lot little art stores and restaurants.
From there we head down to Sedona and take the scenic byway through the red rocks into town. It’s time for a coffee and something sweet so we stop at Starbucks.
We continue on through Oak Creek Canyon then up out of the canyon onto the plateau where we pass Flagstaff and go directly to the Sunset Crater, a moon like lava area. The volcano, erupted about 1000 years ago and left an area of more than 2,000 km2 covered in lava.
Before we head back to Flagstaff we drive the loop leading to Wupatki National Monument. Here the Kayenta Anasazi lived between 1120 and 1210 before they moved on.
Back in Flagstaff, just after sunset, we get a room at the Quality Inn and from there walk to the Outback Steakhouse for a delicious and well deserved Prime Rib. It is windy and has cooled down drastically, we hurry up to get into our hotel room and turn on the heater.
