Koi Pond – phase III

SONY SLT-A77V, f/4.5, 1/320 sec, ISO 100

A few days go by and the fish are doing well despite the sometimes high temperature of the water. It is only the beginning of summer and we worry about long hot weeks ahead of us. Also due to the temperature the ponds are soon full of algae.

The solution: a third pond – even bigger (130 gallons).

Elina had seen this pond when she went shopping for some plants the other day. Because it’s too big for the car Marco and David take the pickup truck with the trailer to pick it up. The next day we all line out where exactly it should be built in and how to connect the water flow for all three ponds.

This time Elina and I dig the hole, taking turns. Elina is loosening the ground with the pickaxe and I get it out with the shovel. It is about 100 Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) and the only protection we have is the sun umbrella. We try do drink more than we are sweating.

The result of the hard work is a beautiful setting with three ponds and a total of 9 Koi fish and a lot of little orange ones. We add some water plants for decoration and shading – it looks gorgeous!
